Dutch
Hill P900
Ultimate Nature Photography Tripod
More
stability / Easier Setup / Greater Durability
I would simply sum it up like this. If your current model tripod is not providing the support you expected it would, then it is time to switch to the P900. I have tried everything else, but nothing is faster to setup or provides more stability at a reasonable weight. It has several novel features not found on other tripods that cost hundreds more. This is a wise choice in carbon fiber tripods for outdoor and general nature photography.
A
student of mine told me about the Dutch Hill P900. Well, I tried it,
and liked it so much, that I just had to became a dealer! This is one
of the finest tripods I have ever used. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
The
ultimate torture test for any piece of equipment is to dunk it in sea water
and let the sand grind its way into every nook and cranny. Let's face it,
the beach and tripods just weren't meant for each other. Some things have
to be learned the hard way, and I have a lot of personal experience with
testing the fine print in tripod warranties. The last one that I ruined
was a Gitzo 1329 carbon fiber that cost over $600. They wanted $340 to
fix it under the lifetime warranty.
You
don't have to be a coastal photographer to appreciate this tripod. I have
torture tested my P900 amphibious tripod in the desert, freshwater lakes & streams,
and alpine snow zones, as well as my stomping grounds on the good old Oregon
coast. The operation is always smooth and it is fast to set up, regardless
of the environment.
This is a two-section protruded carbon fiber tripod
that has no center column. This is one of my favorite features because
you adjust the height by using the quick-release leg lever locks which
are handy near the head of the unit. With no center post to raise, the
tripod is always rock solid. The Maximum height is 60 inches (P900T is
70 inches) and the legs splay out at 90 degrees so that it can lie down
flat on the ground. It is the only tripod that has eliminated 100% camera
vibration with my Pentax 67II medium format camera. I have also used it
with my Canon EOS 35mm system, and my Linhof Master Technika 4x5. This
would be perfect for wildlife photography with super telephoto lenses in
the 400mm to 800mm range or any digital camera. I recommend the Kirk
Enterprises B1 Ballhead with this tripod.
This is my standard field tripod when not hiking long distances. The P900 take handle the terrible abuse I put my tripods through. It is is sturdy, steady and simple to use. I would use it for everything from 35mm, medium and large format.
THIS IS NOT A LIGHTWEIGHT HIKING TRIPOD. Please do not order this item if you don't notice that is weighs 6.5lbs legs only and that its collapsed length is 34.5". There are much lighter tripods out there are those that pack down to smaller collapsed lengths. They won't have the rock solid stability or durability of the P900, but they weigh less. Despite my devotion to the P900 as my everday field tripod, it is simply not my first choice for use in travel photography or for long, strenuous hikes.
